THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH

The coastal area of Newport Beach was originally inhabited by Native Americans whose shells and other artifacts are still found today throughout the area. Settlement in Newport was slow until the year 1870 when the steamer "Vacquero," against all odds, successfully navigated through the area's lower and upper bays to unload its cargo. Brothers James and Robert Irvine, owners of the land that is now Newport Beach, were so astounded by this turn of events that they agreed to open a the newly-found port and call it "Newport!" The Pacific Electric Railway extended its service from Los Angeles to Newport in 1905, ushering in the era of rapid transit — the Newport Beach area began to grow and thrive as a result.
