We recently had Boston Brick & Stone out to repoint the brickwork on the from of our house in Alhambra. It was a very good experience from the initial contact with the estimator to the final walk through with the Supervisor. I think they did an excellent job. The workers were on time every day and didn’t take breaks. They cleaned up every day before they left. It was a T & M job and it came it at the high end of the “ballpark estimate” I was given. The only negative thing I can say, and this is nit-picking, was the final clean-up. It wasn’t quite as thorough as I would have liked. All in all it was a good experience. I would definitely recommend them for any brickwork.

This is the first online review that I have ever done, but Boston Brick and Stone far exceeded my expectations so I have sought out how to go about this. I called them many, many months ago when part of my 30+ yr old fireplace floor caved in. it was a challenging repair and I was afraid that the whole FP may have to come down. Not only were they the only company that was willing to even come and look at the job but they had the talent and experience to do the repair. They were reasonable, professional, and even honored the same price many, many months later when I finally committed to doing it! They inspected it all and also made a few courtesy (crumbling cement) repairs on the exterior. I also really appreciated the kind office staff that was more than patient with me during this process. As a bonus, (this was an inside my home repair) they did not leave behind a spec of dust or grit.

Used them on tricky chimney repair. The price was not the cheapest bid (nor was it the highest) we got but the work was top notch, they have insurance and use full-time polite and skilled masons. They left our house cleaner than when the job started. Their customer service is above-average for a contractor, specifically keeping in touch with me through every phase all the way to billing, you get the idea that they want to ensure you are happy with the work you bought and will do whatever it takes to ensure that result.

First day of work they took an hour longer to get to my house which initially pissed me off (I only wanted to be there for the start of work, needed to get to my own office), but I checked sigalerts and what the foreman said was true, there was a massive freeway snafu and they had to take streets. The foreman apologized and they efficiently got to work.

I did get a couple other bids, chose Boston Brick because theirs was more detailed plus I was there during all of the estimates and Boston’s inspection was more thorough and included pictures (well, I asked to see them and they were happy to e-mail me the ones I wanted to see). I admit I was nervous initially with their price being above average (from what little I knew) but I ended up being very satisfied with my choice.

Note on people saying they disagree with Boston saying their chimney is unsafe, I work in another construction field and this is common: an ethical contractor will tell you what you NEED to hear, a careless one will tell you what you want to hear so he can get you to write him a check. Contractors often have to bid what they feel is going to truly solve the problem and be in your best interests and I suspect that’s what you ran into, whereas other contractors will under-sell if it means coming in lower than the other guy. Doesn’t make it the smart thing to do (but I am guessing here, obviously I don’t know what your chimney scene is and I am not qualified to judge since my field has virtually nothing to do with brick and stone).

Need a chimney inspector?

I needed one to check out the chimney of my potential first home, scoured the web and stumbled onto Boston Brick & Stone.

Since it was an early Sun. weekend I emailed them to get an appointment ASAP.

Followed up today, Monday morning and to my surprise they had my information and were actually working on accommodating my inspection request.

Fast forward to 12:30pm. Mark knocks on the door of the subject property (my appt. was scheduled for 1pm).

Did a thorough exterior inspection inside, outside and on the roof with camera in hand. Brought out the video scope and explained what he was doing and what we were looking at. Finished up and kept everything clean.

I was told on the phone that my official inspection report probably would be available in 1-2 days. I explained to Mark of the time constraints I was in and he said he would do his best to get it done today.

Five hours later, my inspection report lands in my email with a description of the issues he found and per code, what they should be. Also included in the report was an estimate with a detailed breakdown of what would be done to get the chimney back up to par.

Mark exceeded all my expectations in promptness, professionalism and knowledge. I definitely recommend Boston Brick & Stone and will continue to do so in the future.

If you are a potential homebuyer, get your chimney inspected as it is probably one of the most neglected things in a house. Why take the risk and possibly burn your “new’ home down?

My wife and I couldn’t be more pleased with the work that was done to our new patio. It looks far better than we envisioned. The attention to detail, especially around the steps, is simply amazing. Boston Brick & Stone showed expertise in their field, beyond others. Its a new flagstone patio that we are in love with. The workers were diligent and cleaned up completely at the end of the job. I would highly recommend Boston Brick and Stone to anyone in need of chimney repairs or renovations. We just recently purchased a home with 3 chimneys, one of which has a double flue. The company that did our initial chimney inspection provided recommendations for repair, but they overlooked a number of critical things that would have made for inadequate or mediocre repairs. Feeling uncomfortable with this I called Boston Brick and Stone and they provided us with a comprehensive review and estimate, which made so much more sense.

BB&S was professional on every level, from the owner, to the job supervisor, to the workers, to the administrative staff. Detailed explanations were provided for every step and all of my questions were answered. The work on the chimneys was done expertly and skillfully with products that seemed superior. They were on the job everyday as promised and they actually finished prior to the projected completion date. They were careful to protect our personal household items, and when finished they did a great job cleaning up the work area. Lastly, we felt the fee charged for these repairs was very reasonable.

Hands down I would absolutely recommend BB&S as I found them to be extremely professional, fair-minded and honest in their approach, and the quality of their work superior.

I had a problem with a contractor who said he could rebuild my chimney. I just needed was my chimney rebuilt, but he did not know what he was doing. He wound up destroying the firebox and the fireplace. I was in a bind I did not know who to trust. My home is a Historical Craftsman Home with a Historical Fireplace. I took a chance with Boston Brick & Stone and that was the best thing that ever happened to me. Boston Brick & Stone did a Great Job.They rebuilt my fireplace so that it looks just like it was before it was destroyed. They built my chimney with the designs it had originally.my fireplace & chimney look original just like when I bought the house 36 years ago. The worker cleaned up every day before they left and were very nice.I strongly recommend them and there high quality work.

I hired Boston Brick and Stone (BB&S) this past summer 2007 for two jobs: replacement of a old failing retaining wall, and a demolition/replacement of an old stone chimney.

I’ll go into detail about the retaining wall job: I got several bids from different construction firms for this job. Some were cheap bids, but they skimped on quality and details. BB&S’s bid was very detailed and thorough… several pages long. Bottom line price was not cheap, but I got a good feeling about BB&S. I ultimately decided to go with them. Work commenced almost immediately.

The retaining wall job was fairly complex, as the wall divides two properties that are on different slope levels. The old existing wall was slowly leaning over to the side of a building… not much physical space to work in. Nonetheless, BB&S did an amazing job. Their expert foreman supervised the job, and the owner of the company, Dave, would come by often to check out the work. They removed brush and heavy bushes, demoed the old wall, laid a concrete foundation for the new wall, constructed the new wall, and finished off with a drainage system for the wall. BB&S got an engineer to look at the old wall, and to design a new one that would not fail as the old one did. They pulled the permits from the City, and when the City inspector would come by to inspect the progress, he would say that these guys really know what they’re doing. I would have to agree with him. Their work crews really know what they are doing, and they have an extremely strong work ethic. The job got done in about a month, in less time than originally expected, despite some delays and hot temperatures. The end product will not be falling over or failing in any way during my lifetime. As Dave told me: That wall is solid - it’s not going anywhere!

Very professional, very clean, very organized, very honest, courteous staff and crews, quality work, foremen are memorable and true masters of their trades. A little pricey, but in construction, you get what you pay for. I especially appreciated the daily call from their scheduling manager, Holly, informing me about whether the crew was going to be out at the jobsite the next day or not, upcoming City inspections, materials delivery logistics, etc… This excellent communication with me, the homeowner, definitely helped to alleviate some of the stress that comes with home renovation. I would hire them again or refer people to them in a heartbeat. This kind of construction company is a rarity in our day of cookie-cutter construction and quick, cheap work.
